Acupuncture FAQs
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us anytime.
How Does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used for thousands of years to promote health and wellness. It is a safe, natural, and effective way to restore balance and harmony to the mind and body- improving your physical, emotional, and mental health.
When an acupuncturist inserts needles into certain points on the body, they stimulate the body to heal itself, to bring itself back to balance. Electrical signals are sent through our nerves to the brain and as a result, hormones and endorphins are released. The needles encourage blood flow and the reduction of inflammation. The treatments are inherently relaxing because the needles trigger our parasympathetic nervous system which calms our body and mind.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective complementary health practice that can treat a number of health conditions including chronic pain, mental health issues, fertility concerns, among other health conditions.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained acupuncturist. The risk of any serious side effects is very low. Thrive Acupuncture has over 15 years of experience in the field and follow strict hygiene protocols including the use of sterile and disposable needles.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture typically causes minimal discomfort at most. You may feel a slight prick or “zingy” sensation when the needle is inserted, but most people do not experience any pain. Your comfort is our primary concern.
Do you have direct billing?
Yes, we are able to direct bill to most major insurance providers. We do recommend contacting your benefits provider to ensure this option is available to you. Please bring your insurance information to first your appointment.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
Though it varies depending on the individual, should see positive changes within the first 3 sessions, and more lasting changes in 6-10 sessions. Acupuncture is most effective as a cumulative therapy, so regular treatments can provide long-term benefits for your overall health and wellness.
What can I expect for my first appointment?
If this is your first time visiting Thrive Acupuncture, you can visit our New Acupuncture Patients section for more information on what to expect for your first appointment.
What are your prices for services?
Prices for acupuncture range between $100-$145 per visit, depending on the type of treatment. You can find more information by visiting our Pricing section.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Acupuncture is completely safe during a normal, healthy pregnancy. If you are unsure, just ask your doctor before seeking treatment. We have treated many women during their pregnancy and we enjoy supporting them during this (sometimes trying) time. Here are a few reasons to visit an acupuncturist during your pregnancy:
- Constipation
- Pelvic girdle pain
- Hip pain, back pain
- Nausea, morning sickness
- Migraines, headaches
- Breech position (best treated between 34-36 weeks)
- Heartburn
- Hemorrhoids
- Stress, anxiety
- High Blood pressure
- Gestational diabetes
Can acupuncture help me quit smoking?
Acupuncture is an effective tool to enable one to quit smoking by minimizing cravings, calming the nervous system and strengthening will power. Acupuncture can only work if the person is ready to quit and willing to commit to the process. Acupuncture intercepts messages sent by the brain to the body that demand more nicotine, thereby disrupting the addictive process. It can eliminate most cravings, but not the habit. Generally, the treatment reduces cravings from 20+ to only 3-5 a day. The person’s responsibility is to make it through those few cravings.
Please refrain from smoking or using nicotine replacements for 5 hours before your appointment and avoid having any cigarettes in your possession.
We recommend 2 treatments the first week (at least one day apart), 1 treatment per week for 2 weeks after the initial week, then monthly treatments for 4-6 months.
Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes! If you come to the front door, there is one step from the parking lot surface to the sidewalk/entrance. If you need wheelchair access, you can opt to park behind the clinic where there is a ramp to get to the entrance level – just let us know and we will be ready for you in the back!
